북미서비스노조(SEIU) 2백만 조합원을 대표하여 두 분과 투쟁하고 있는 모든 민주노총 조합원에게 깊은 연대를 전하고자 합니다.
저명한 미국 노예제 폐지론자 프레드릭 더글라스는 이렇게 말했습니다.
“인류의 해방이 진척되어 온 역사를 통틀어 볼 때 당대 취해진 최선의 양보조치는 모두 열렬한 투쟁의 산물이었다. 투쟁이 없으면 진보도 없다. 입으로는 자유를 옹호한다면서 투쟁에 나서지 않으려는 사람은 밭을 갈지 않고 곡물을 수확하려는 사람과 같으며, 천둥 번개 없이 비가 오기를 바라는 사람과 같으며, 거센 풍랑 없는 바다를 원하는 사람과 같다.”
누구도 이 말을 한국 노동 운동을 이루는 용감한 노동자들과 지도자들보다 더 잘 이해하지 못할 것입니다. 여러분들은 해방과 정의라는 대의를 위해 투쟁하며 1875년 더글라스가 한 말을 현재 거리에서, 일터에서 실천하고 있습니다. 더 나은 사회를 건설하려는 여러분들의 용기와 결의는 전 세계 노동자들에게 영감을 주고 있습니다.
한국과 미국 노동자들의 투쟁은 분명하게 연결되어 있으며 우리는 여러분과 함께 합니다. 어려운 시기에 우리가 할 수 있는 일이 있다면 주저 없이 알려주시기 바랍니다.

Dear President Han Sang-gyun and Secretary General Lee Young-joo:
On behalf of the more than 2 million members of SEIU, I want to express our deep feelings of solidarity to you and all the members of the KCTU in your current fight.
As the great American abolitionist Frederick Douglass said:
“The whole history of the progress of human liberty shows that all
concessions yet made to her august claims have been born of earnest struggle
. . . If there is no struggle there is no progress. Those who profess to favor
freedom and yet deprecate agitation are men who want crops without
plowing up the ground; they want rain without thunder and lightning. They
want the ocean without the awful roar of its many waters.”"
No one knows this better than the brave workers and leaders of Korea’'s labor
movement. You are putting the words of Douglass, spoken in 1857, into practice in
your streets and workplaces as you fight for the cause of liberty and justice. Your
fortitude and commitment to building a better society are an inspiration to labor
movements around the world.
We see our struggles, for American and Korean workers, as inexorably linked and
we stand with you. If there is anything we can do to help during this challenging
time, please do not hesitate to let us know.
